Der zweite Schiedsrichter unterstützt den ersten Schiedsrichter bei der Kontrolle der Meldelisten und Ausweise der beiden Mannschaften. Darüber hinaus wählt er eine entsprechende Anzahl an Spiel- und Ersatzbällen aus und überprüft deren Druck. Auch die Kontrolle auf Vollständigkeit der Wechseltafeln obliegt dem zweiten Schiedsrichter.  
The second referee shall assist the first referee in checking the entry lists and identity cards of the two teams. He also selects an appropriate number of match and replacement balls and checks their pressure.
 
The second referee collects the line-up sheets from the two coaches 12 minutes before the start of the match. In all subsequent sets, he does this during the 3-minute set interval.


Der zweite Schiedsrichter holt 12 Minuten vor Spielbeginn die Aufstellungszettel von den beiden Coaches. In allen Folgesätzen tut er dies in der 3-minütigen Satzpause.

* Netzfehler

* Blockfehler durch einen Hinterspieler oder Libero
* Bälle, die den Boden oder ein externes Objekt berühren, bei denen der erste Schiedsrichter keine Sicht auf ihn/diese hat
* Angriffsfehler eines Hinterspielers oder Liberos


Darüber hinaus obliegt es dem zweiten Schiedsrichter, Anträge auf Wechsel und Team-Time-Outs zu autorisieren und die Dauer der Time-Outs einzuhalten. Mehrfachwechsel werden vom zweiten Schiedsrichter koordiniert, sodass die Schreiber die Wechselspieler klar erkennen und notieren können.

Zwischen zwei Sätzen muss der zweite Schiedsrichter die Aufstellungszettel von den beiden Coaches besorgen und sie den Schreibern übergeben. Die Dauer zwischen zwei Sätzen beträgt drei Minuten. Diese Zeitspanne wird vom letzten Punkt des vorhergehenden Satzes bis zur Autorisierung des ersten Service gemessen. Das heißt, dass die Mannschaften nach rund zwei Minuten auf das Spielfeld zurückgeholt werden müssen. Der zweite Schiedsrichter pfeift die Mannschaften in den Sätzen 2 bis 5 auf das Feld.
